DBT
What is DBT?
There are many different types of therapy and your therapist can help you determine which will work best for you. Even when it comes to traditional talk therapy, there are many styles to consider. DBT is just one of them. Here is some more information to help you decide if you want to explore this therapy technique.
Definition
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is an evidence-based psychotherapy that was originally used to treat those with Borderline Personality Disorder. Today it is used for a wide range of mood disorders including anxiety and depression. It can also be used to manage suicidal ideation, self harm, and substance abuse.
Practice
If your therapist recommends DBT, you may explore this technique in one or a few ways. Some therapists will like to use a classroom setting where a group of people learn behavioral skills through homework and role-playing assignments. You will also likely have one on one psychotherapy treatment sessions on a weekly basis. In between sessions, your therapist may be available over the phone when a crisis is present.
Results
DBT through one on one psychotherapy treatment can help you to be more mindful towards yourself and your surroundings, tolerant of stressful situations, effective in interpersonal relationships, and flexible with your emotions. All of these results will help you to live a fuller, happier life every day.
